Tetris Didn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category May Address This Issue

Each time a major awards ceremony nears, there’s always a demand to include additional classifications to honor underappreciated efforts and fill the spirits of enthusiasts with niche passions.

My colleague previously argued for a horror game category. That would rule. So would strategy board titles, which is someone's personal cause. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front because like all single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification supporting my request is the most urgent and significant. Here's the proposal: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Classifying creative works isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and typically spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why cinema institutions don’t do it. However, it represents an essential concession in the world of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.

Existing Game Classification System

The major gaming awards offer these award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these award types effectively encompass many game types, making space possible for numerous titles.

Not so for logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Think about these outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges of one title, intense tile-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

Many instances occur outstanding logic titles launched regularly that have no home in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match for categories like Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated for anything that year
  • Another creative title missed out during that ceremony
  • A beloved organization game got ignored in 2021
  • Just some puzzle games barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

Frequently they represent small games, yet the craft of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Well-known matching games count as most engaged experiences globally continuing this trend for over a decade.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges popular creative games for the title of best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, while interacting with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. It would be easy to populate five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.

To emphasize again, these represent titles that otherwise have no home in important events. Puzzle game makers function at the hard edge game development, creating some of most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Comparable to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
